Post Ranch Inn sits on a cliff that is either an act of nerve or an act of faith depending on how you feel about heights. Opened in 1992 on a former homestead and cattle ranch, the resort is built from reclaimed redwood and glass. The rooms have no televisions or alarm clocks — an early, deliberate decision that reads today like it was made with stargazing specifically in mind.

The low lighting across the property is quite intentional, meant to preserve darkness for wildlife and stargazers. It was implemented long before "dark sky travel" was a phrase anyone used. Sergio Esparza, a 33-year veteran of the property, runs the astronomy sessions, programming his telescope to reveal Saturn's rings, the craters of the moon, and the Orion Nebula — twice weekly, at the Jade Pool or between courses at Sierra Mar.

The ocean holds a kind of patience most of us have forgotten how to notice. The sea keeps its own time, indifferent to ours. Standing on a cliff with the Pacific Ocean 1,200 feet below and the Milky Way above, that patience is easy to feel and hard to explain.

The property discourages children for safety reasons — it sits on a cliff with unfenced trails and pools without lifeguards — and keeps a minimum age of 18 for anyone checking into a room.
