Boynton Canyon is a sandstone canyon in northern Arizona where the walls rise 1,000 feet on three sides. It is quiet in a way that is different from the quiet of open desert. Enchantment Resort is built into the back of it, which means guests are not near the red rocks. They are inside them.

The resort has 218 casitas spread across the canyon floor, each with private patios oriented toward the rock formations. The spa — Mii amo — is considered one of the finest destination spas in North America and operates as a separate experience within the resort. The pool situation is generous with a main pool plus smaller plunge pools serving clusters of casitas. The food is serious. The service is attentive without being present. Richard Feynman — physicist, Nobel laureate, and one of the more persuasive writers about science — argued that understanding how something works does not diminish its beauty but deepens it. Sedona's red rocks make the same argument. The Navajo sandstone that forms Boynton Canyon was deposited by wind approximately 180 million years ago, during the Jurassic period, when this part of Arizona was a vast sand dune. The resort runs astronomer-led stargazing sessions which are complimentary for guests – check with the resort on what days and times. Multiple telescopes are provided and astrophotography experiences are available. The Sedona community has held IDA Dark Sky Community status since 2014, with active lighting ordinances maintaining measurable sky darkness across the region. The canyon walls do the rest by blocking ambient light and creating a natural dark-sky enclosure that makes Bortle Class 3 feel darker than the number might suggest.
