ULUM Moab
Most destinations are thrilled to earn one dark sky designation. The area around Moab has three — Arches, Canyonlands, and Dead Horse Point State Park, all certified Dark Sky Parks within an hour of each other. The darkness here is not by accident. It is actively protected, carefully maintained, and in our view, genuinely remarkable. ULUM achieved DarkSky Approved Lodging status in 2025 — a certification requiring strict standards on outdoor lighting, fixture shielding, and color temperature. This resort was built to take full advantage of the surroundings.
There are 50 luxury tents on 200 acres near Looking Glass Arch with views of Canyonlands National Park. Luxury linens and bath products, king beds, dipping pools, and a Michelin-Key make this a luxurious experience worth the travel.

Under a Bortle Class 2 sky in canyon country, with the Milky Way rising over red rock walls, that stops being an abstract idea and starts to feel real.
On a practical note, summer weekends bring real crowds to nearby Arches. If stillness is part of what you're after, book for September or October. The Milky Way is still visible, the canyon roads are quieter, and the temperature at night is close to perfect.
Dark Sky Details
Moab sits inside what astronomers call the dark sky corridor of the American Southwest — high desert, low humidity, almost no industrial development for hundreds of miles. The Bortle Class 2 designation here is consistent and measurable. Here is the science worth knowing: on a truly moonless night at Bortle Class 2, the Milky Way generates enough light to cast a faint but real shadow on the ground below it. Not a metaphor. An actual shadow. Most people raised in or near cities have never experienced darkness sufficient for that to be possible. At ULUM, on the right night, it is just part of the show.
The resort holds DarkSky Approved Lodging certification, with outdoor lighting that meets strict standards for shielding, lumen levels, and color temperature. Neighboring Arches and Canyonlands are among the largest protected dark sky areas in the country. Annual clear nights average around 240 — among the highest in the continental United States.
