About
Willow House
Willow House opened in 2019, the first hotel project of founder Lauren Werner, who designed it herself with Georgia O'Keeffe's home at Abiquiu in mind. Twelve standalone casitas sit across 287 acres of desert outside Terlingua, each a simple box of earth-brown concrete placed so that nothing stands between the porch and the view. The layout follows a Texas ranch with private casitas grouped around a main house, a fire pit, pool, yoga deck and a sunken reading nook as the shared spaces.
The sky is the other half of the design. Willow House sits about six miles from Big Bend National Park and inside the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, which in 2022 joined the region's dark-sky parks into one protected area that crosses into Mexico. With almost no light in any direction, the Milky Way rises straight over the Chisos, and the resort's open patios make every clear night a viewing night.
Worth knowing before booking: this is a small, quiet retreat, not a full-service resort. There is no restaurant on site; guests share a communal kitchen, and Terlingua's handful of restaurants are a short drive away. With only twelve casitas, the best dates book well ahead.
STARGAZING AMENITIES: Casita porches and patios facing the Chisos Mountains, 287 acres of open desert with no neighboring lights, minimal property lighting, short drive to Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park
Dark Sky Details
West Texas has the darkest skies in the continental United States, and Big Bend is the darkest part of it. The nearest towns are tiny and widely spaced, and Willow House keeps its own lighting minimal, so the sky over the property reads as a Bortle Class 1, the darkest class on the scale.
At 2,900 feet the property sits below our elevation bonus threshold, but the dry desert climate delivers around 260 clear nights a year, just over the clear-nights bonus line. Add the reserve-wide lighting protections and two certified dark-sky parks within easy reach, and Willow House earns one of the highest scores in North America.
