Zannier Sonop is built on top of a boulder field made up of enormous piles of granite left behind by ancient volcanic activity. Its ten tents (eight one-bedroom, two two-bedroom) are linked by raised walkways across the rocks, and the whole camp is dressed like a 1920s British expedition, down to more than 550 sourced antiques. The nearest town, Betta, is about 12 miles away; beyond that there is very little for a long way in any direction.

That isolation is the reason the lodge takes the sky as seriously as it does. Every tent has its own telescope, so you can look out across the desert by day and up at Saturn or the Magellanic Clouds after dark without leaving your deck. A communal stargazing deck with vintage-style telescopes gives staff a place to walk you through the southern constellations after dinner. The lodge manages its own lighting to keep the camp from competing with the view.

Days fill with e-bike rides, horseback excursions, guided nature drives, and an open-air cinema by the pool. Worth knowing before booking: Sonop is remote even by Namibian standards. It is about six hours by road from Windhoek, or a charter flight to its own airstrip and winter nights can drop well below freezing, which is exactly when the sky is at its clearest.
