Bushmans Kloof is over 18,000 acres of private wilderness reserve in the rugged northern Cederberg, about three hours north of Cape Town. It guards one of the richest concentrations of San rock art in the world with more than 130 sites, some painted as long as 10,000 years ago. A Relais & Châteaux member since 2000 and part of the Red Carnation collection, it pairs the ancient landscape with 17 rooms and suites, two private villas, a full spa, and four swimming pools. The reserve is malaria- and predator-free, with Cape mountain zebra, eland, and more than 150 bird species.

The night sky is woven into the same story as the rock art. The lodge's Cosmic Folklore Experience is an hour-long session after dinner, led by a local astronomer, that moves through the southern constellations while telling the skylore and traditions the San attached to them. The stars here are presented as part of the landscape's cultural history, not just a view.

Getting there is part of the appeal. You can either drive over Thomas Bain's 1870s Pakhuis Pass or fly in to the reserve's private airstrip in about an hour from Cape Town. It is worth knowing before booking that this is the Western Cape's winter-rainfall zone, so June through August brings the cloudiest nights, and gates close at 6 p.m. for anyone arriving by road.
