"Wolwedans Dune Camp sits on the flank of a red dune inside NamibRand Nature Reserve, a private conservation area of more than 215,000 hectares that has spent four decades returning former sheep farms to open desert. The camp is small by design — six canvas-and-timber tents and one family suite, sixteen guests at most — and runs on solar power, which means no air conditioning and, just as importantly, almost no light spilling out into the dark.

The signature here isn't a telescope; it's the bed. Every tent's private deck has a daybed that converts into a star bed, and from September to May the camp also arranges full sleep-outs further into the dunes, so guests can fall asleep watching the Milky Way turn overhead instead of glimpsing it on the walk back from dinner. NamibRand became Africa's first and only International Dark Sky Reserve in 2012, and its lighting rules apply to every property inside the fence.
